In April of 2018, I was fortunate enough to be included in a ground-breaking
program known as The Masterful Man. Myself, along with three other men, were
skillfully directed down a path of self-discovery by the brain-child of this program
, Sifu Harinder Singh Sabharwal.
Sifu Singh and I met in 2010. Throughout the past 10 years, I have had the honor
and privilege of being exposed to his teachings, his philosophies, his skill, and
his mentorship. I have seen him occupy the role of teacher, student, author,
husband, father, and community leader. He exemplifies the definition of a
masterful man and gives credence to the concept of living masterfully. Unlike
others who demonstrate discordant results between "the walk and the talk,” Sifu
Singh practices what he preaches and carries himself in a manner consistent
with his teachings.
When I began the course, I had no idea what to expect. Intellectually, I assumed
the program would be designed to improve me as an individual. Little did I know
how encompassing the program would be. We learned, as a group, to discover
our fears, to peel back layers of guilt, shame, embarrassment, resentment, and
insecurity. We did exercises to improve ourselves physically, mentally, and
spiritually. Sifu Singh let us down a path, giving us tools along the way, to be able
to accept the reality of discovering who we really are, at the same time dispelling
the notion of who we thought we were.
My career encompasses two professions, veterinary medicine and martial arts. I
am the medical director for a successful three doctor, small animal, veterinary
practice in Dallas-Fort Worth Texas. Additionally, I am the owner and head
instructor of a martial arts school in the DFW metroplex and defensive tactics
instructor for a local security company as well as a Fort Worth based Police
Academy. Despite my accomplishments and successes in these two fields, I
have struggled with balancing my work, family commitments, and personal time
and often found myself energy depleted. The Masterful Man program
systematically prepared us to recognize our weaknesses, our vulnerabilities, and
our shortcomings.
Progressing from one lesson to another, we began to discover
the importance of training and strengthening our physical body, our energy body,
our spiritual body. Our program was designed in such a way that the skills
and tools learned earlier in the course prepared us for the harsh reality as we
began to learn who we really are. Throughout this process, we became stronger
physically and we learned the value of mindful meditation while exploring Tai Chi
and Qi Gong. We learned a new definition for spirituality, simply stated "thoughts
of our minds and feelings of our hearts.”
The exercises were fascinating, challenging, and above all life changing. I
realized through Sifu Singh teachings how to be a better student, teacher,
parent, spouse and friend. I learned to find calm amongst chaos and to start each and every day lending grace.
This program is not for those looking for an easy fix or those not willing to put
forth a significant amount of time and energy. I feel confident saying that those
who are fortunate enough to be included in the Masterful Man program will be
rewarded for their effort multiple times over and will experience life altering
results.
